Restoring Minds, Renewing Faith: A Mental Health Initiative for Faith-Based Communities

Health & Healing Sunday: Taking it to the Streets Health and Healing

“Restoring Minds, Renewing Faith” spotlights a transformative mental health initiative designed to bridge the gap between spiritual care and psychological wellness in Black church communities. This video highlights the impactful work of Ms. Carlton, who played a pivotal role in organizing and executing three major philanthropic events focused on depression screening within faith-based settings.

Through compassionate engagement, Ms. Carlton conducted interviews with church leadership, administered the PHQ-9 depression screening tool, and facilitated qualitative assessments. Her immediate follow-up care for individuals at high risk—including those expressing suicidal ideation—demonstrates the initiative’s commitment to safety, dignity, and healing.

This project affirms that emotional health and spiritual identity are not at odds but deeply intertwined. By equipping spiritual leaders with culturally sensitive tools, fostering peer support networks, and embedding mental health resources within churches, the initiative creates sacred spaces where faith and mental wellness walk hand in hand.
